Finding Strength Through Self-Defense: A Workshop for Trauma Survivors
Trauma and PTSD can leave you feeling powerless and disconnected from your body. But through empowerment self-defense, you can start reclaiming your sense of control and confidence.
Join us for an introductory workshop focused on helping trauma survivors build self-protection skills in a supportive environment.
Our 4-hour class will provide simple techniques to help you set strong verbal boundaries and remain grounded when emotionally activated. We’ll focus on mind-body skills to help you remain centered rather than go into fight-or-flight mode whenever you feel threatened.
Empowerment Self-Defense (ESD) is a holistic approach to self-defense, teaching both physical and psychological techniques to help people—especially survivors of sexual assault and other forms of violence—reclaim their power and feel safe in their own bodies. ESD is a form of self-protection training that uses physical, mental, and emotional strategies to help its practitioners improve their self-confidence, promote personal autonomy, and increase both safety and the joy of being alive.
Why Self-Defense for Trauma Survivors?
Many people who have experienced trauma, such as violence or abuse, struggle to feel safe and confident in their own skin. The right self-defense program can help them to regain control of their bodies and minds by providing opportunities to learn how to protect themselves in the event of future attacks. Empowerment self-defense in particular can help students rewire their minds around the idea of violence, releasing deep-seated somatic memories and facilitating the process of integration.
People who train in ESD report that it helps them regain their self-esteem and become better equipped to handle challenging situations.
What You’ll Gain By Participating
Trauma can make you feel disconnected from your power and recovery can often feel like an endless, uphill climb.
Fortunately, we have teachable skills that can help make the journey to wholeness faster. While we can’t cover everything in a four-hour workshop, we can get you started on a path toward living safer and feeling happier.
This workshop aims to help you reclaim your confidence through:
- Strategies to tune into body signals and instinctual reactions
- Mindfulness and grounding techniques to remain present
- Physical and verbal tools to establish boundaries and regain control of your thoughts during confrontational situations
- Boundary setting to say “no” and protect yourself
- Increased self-efficacy and resilience
- A sense of community and validation from other survivors
Our trauma-informed instructors understand the impacts of PTSD and how to teach self-protection with care. You’ll learn to defend yourself in a safe, supportive space focused on healing and empowerment.
