We Are Worth Defending: Empowerment Self-Defense by and for Women of Color

What happens when Black women gather to learn self-defense from instructors who look like them, understand them, and honor what they carry?

You get something more than training.
You get a movement.

We Are Worth Defending is a groundbreaking Empowerment Self-Defense program created by LifeCare Alliance and IMPACT Safety—by Women of Color, for Women of Color. Born in Columbus, Ohio, this initiative was designed to do more than teach physical skills. It was built to restore confidence, affirm dignity, and create safety from the inside out.

A Different Kind of Self-Defense

Participants don’t just learn how to block, strike, or set boundaries. They learn how to take up space—physically, emotionally, and spiritually.

As one trainer put it:

“We help them see their true value and beauty. To say, ‘Yes, I am a part of this world. I have a right to defend myself.’”

This isn’t just a curriculum. It’s a reclamation.

From Vulnerability to Community

The training brings together a diverse group of Black women and Women of Color who, in many cases, are meeting each other for the first time. But something extraordinary happens as they move through the exercises together. A shared energy builds—a mix of laughter, tears, solidarity, and strength.

One participant described it this way:

“Getting through the things that we were learning with that cheerleading support in the background… people just knowing what you’re dealing with and supporting you as you go through it—it was fantastic.”

Many were surprised by how emotional the experience became. Old memories surfaced. Tender places got touched. But the room held those stories with care—and no one had to go through it alone.

“It was part of the experience,” one woman said, “and I’m happy that it happened.”

Skill Building with Soul

The physical skills—yes, they’re there. And yes, they’re empowering. But what made the biggest difference wasn’t just how to escape a wrist grab. It was what came after the technique: the realization that safety is not a privilege—it’s a right. One worth defending, together.

“I am so excited about empowering other women,” a graduate shared, “giving them their voice, helping them see their true value and beauty.”

A Ripple Effect in Motion

After graduation, participants leave with more than just knowledge. They leave buzzing with purpose. Some go on to become instructors. Others bring the lessons back to their daughters, sisters, friend groups, or spiritual communities. The impact is generational.

Why It Matters

Too often, Women of Color are left out of the self-defense conversation—or offered solutions that don’t reflect their lived realities. We Are Worth Defending is changing that.

By centering culture, trauma-awareness, and community care, it offers safety on our own terms. And it’s building something bigger than any single class.

It’s building a sisterhood. A future. A standard we all deserve.
